Yes, it has been a very long time ago since I was here and wrote something here..

A lot has happened in the mean time. what has not changed is that i am still drinking delicious water kefir, not as much as in the beginning when I discovered it, but I do still make it and drink it on a regular basis.

Unfortunately I haven't sold a lot of my water kefir. Yes, I still have it and it is still growing at an amazing rate in my home, without me doing anything special to make that happen.

So do let me know when you would like to get some of my kefir gems too, I can send it to you wherever you are.

I have decided to change my prices to make it easier, since here in Belgium people seem to feel charging 8 € for some kefir grains is really much. And I would really like people to enjoy the kefir in the first place.

I have been making attempts to edit prices in my old posts but I don't seem to be able to do that. Mean time I can already tell you my price for a water kefir starter kit is now 5 €, boxing and handling 2.5 € and then the costs of priority or registered mail to wherever you are.

In Belgium: € 1.65 ( + € 4.3)

In Europe: € 4.9 ( + € 4.3)

The World: € 5.6 ( + € 4.3)

The difference between priority mail and registered mail is that registered mail is guaranteed to arrive, but it costs a € 4.3 more. I have experienced that some people take the risk and have me send them the water kefir just by priority mail. Up to you to choose.

Water kefir en nog meer Water kefir

Hallo Vlaamse (en Vlaams verstaanders en lezers) en Nederlandse lezers.

Ik vond dat het hoog tijd werd jullie weer eens wat extra aandacht te geven.


Ik verdrink in Water Kefir

Moet er nog water kefir zijn?

Wie wil er nog Water Kefir?


Kortom, als er niet snel wat mensen Water Kefir van mij willen, moet ik erover gaan denken die 'waterige juweeltjes' weg te gooien.

Aan de andere kant zou ik dat dood en doodzonde vinden.

Op de een of andere manier blijven die Water Kefir korrels maar groeien bij mij thuis en ondanks dat het een geweldig drankje is, lijkt het me toch nog vrij onbekend en onbemind.

Waarom dat zo is, is mij niet zo duidelijk.

Maar, ik weet ook dat ik tot voor kort, tot 4 maanden geleden ook helemaal niets wist over het bestaan van Water kefir.


Sinds ik het ontdekt heb, drink ik praktisch niets anders meer

De enige dagen dat ik nog wel eens een wijntje of een biertje drink, is als ik uitga met vrienden of een etentje heb bij de familie. Ik kan namelijk moeilijk mijn flesje water kefir meenemen op restaurant of op cafe. Ik vrees dat dat niet geaccepteerd zou worden en ik wil de dingen ook niet overdrijven.

Maar als ik gewoon lekker thuis ben, geef mij dan maar 'water kefir'!


Vroeger, maakte mijn moeder dagelijks voor mezelf en mijn zussen een soort yoghurt met kefir.

Washing Water Kefir, a weekly meditation

About every 6 days at the most all those water kefir grains need a thorough wash

Just to make sure they stay clean, fresh and alive.

Which means: to empty every single jar into a seeve, -by now the top of a whole fridge full,

to rinse them thoroughly under streaming cold water,

to return them to their jars, after they also have been thoroughly rinsed with fresh water.

Last is to add fresh water with a few spoons of organic sugar.



Because the grains keep growing, by now it has become a 1 hour task which cannot be rushed

Which is why I consider it a weekly meditation.

Anything you do with your total presence, love and awareness can be called a meditation.

So by now the whole washing process has turned into a ritual and certain steps have become part of the routine.


-I prepare the area by completely emptying and cleaning my sink and the surrounding surfaces first of everything else.

-By now I need quite a lot of space too as the amount of jars filled with kefir grains have increased to a double number.

-I get out all my tools, containers and other parafernalia before starting the process.

-Over time I have become more efficient.

-Lately I have also started to prepare the fresh sugar water before, so I don't have to stir too much in large bottles or jars and I just add the prepared sugar water after refilling the jars.

-Ending the entire process I am filled with a sense of satisfaction and stillness.

Water kefir, prejudice and transformation

Last week I had friends visiting me. There was something happening in that meeting that I would like to share with you 'water kefir lovers'..

It has something to do with being open and unprejudiced towards something you don't know and haven't had the joy and the benefit of experiencing.

In this case the issue was -of course- water kefir. About it's use and it's effects on the health of body, mind and spirit..

The friends in question are a couple. The woman being a very dear friend of mine since a very long time.

Actually since a time I was a different person all together. I would almost call it another lifetime.

It was quite a wild time -an enjoyable time then- but also a time in which I was drinking way too much alcohol, although it was already starting to dawn on me that all that drinking wasn't exactly good for me.

Her husband I would describe as 'a man of the world', a real 'burgundian' as we would call it here, a good cook and loving 'the good life', (nothing wrong with any of that by the way); an intellectual and very knowledgeable about many subjects.

The kind of man who has a very clear opinion about everything and enjoys going into a 'full on' debate on almost any subject. He is very well spoken and enjoys the feeling of being right.

Unfortunately he feels the need to argue also about subjects he knows (as in: has experienced) nothing about.



I this case the subject was 'water kefir'

It was very interesting to see what happened to him, to his facial expression when I was telling them about my story with water kefir and what happened to me since I started drinking it now 3 months ago.

When I told them how I spontaneously stopped drinking beer or any other alcoholic beverages and how my intake of sweets, cakes and cookies and even my intake of food in general got less and also changed.

And not because I was 'forcing' myself with any kind of diet, but because it simply happened as a natural consequence of drinking water kefir and -really enjoying- the taste and it's effect on me each and every day since I discovered it.


I could see his face change

a crinkle of disgust around the nose, (of which I am sure he was totally oblivious), an expression of disbelieve and a slight scepticism appearing on his face in a quick succession and that about something he knew nothing about. When I mentioned water kefir, he had neither heard of it, let alone tasted it.

I could almost 'see' the thoughts for the start of a 'strong' debate take shape in his mind. And then he started. An argument which didn't last long and of which I don't remember much about. As it simply left no lasting impression in my mind. It was clearly based on a total lack of experience and knowledge.

And why? Maybe because we are talking here about something 'natural' and 'healthy'. Words which in the world today often seem to be treated as dirty words.

Interesting to say the least.


I found the whole experience remarkable and enlightening

I wonder now what he would have done or said had he first tasted it before hearing about it.

Maybe I will surprise him one day when I offer him a glass of

'very rare Champagne'. ;-)


Besides all that, it was also interesting to observe what happened in my own mind.

The memory of the person I used to be, the partying, the smoking, the drinking, the loudness and a certain unsensitivity towards myself and others.

The difference between the person I used to be then and the person I am today.

Acknowledging at the same time the absence of a feeling of wanting to be accepted and the absence of the need to compromise who I am.

And, that feels really good!

Amazing how a simple thing like drinking water kefir can also help to transform the personality.

Besides Water Kefir...

The new year has definitely kicked in

It's only 6 days old but it's kicked me left and right.

Yes, It's been a while since I wrote here. The water kefir gems are growing beautifully, out of bounds. All is well there.

They are really becoming too many.

In the mean time -amongst other things- I have been struggling with Paypal. And the struggle continues.

Besides that I am about to get a much better PC.

You should see the one I'm working on right now.

You wouldn't believe it still works, but it does.. It's a small laptop with a 1.5 gb harddisk from 1998. Ancient by today's norm to say the least.


So besides playing chess with Paypal

I've been visiting PC stores, Mac-stores, stores 'on and off-line' and still there are a few choices to make.

Since I am not a computer techie or wizkid, and my budget is limited, I also read a lot in PC magazines to inform myself on what's available:

-what's a good processor and what's a 'slow processor'?

-Why have 512 mb ram memory or why upgrade to 1 gb?

-I'm comparing prices and there is the -for me- difficult choice between a desktop and a laptop.

Having been a travelling gipsy, always with this ancient laptop in my handluggage travelling with me, -for many years- the choice is a difficult one.

And then there's also the possibility of going for 2nd hand until I can buy what I would really like and know what I really want.

Yes, I know, this isn't much about them 'Aqua Gems' but it's life too and that's why you haven't heard from me much lately... My mind has been consumed by other challenges.

What is Water kefir?

What are these water kefir grains??

A friend of mine who called me yesterday to wish me a happy birthday (yes, and thank you!!) had visited this 'Water Kefir blogspot'.

She knows nothing about water kefir and she made it pretty clear to me that it is pretty confusing when you know nothing about water kefir and to find out 'what the hell is she talking about?'. So I figured it is time to thank my friend (thanks Apeks) and time to answer the question posed here above.

Without any doubt these grains are identical to what they called 'Tibi' in 1930 Switzerland. There and then they already knew about these Micro-organisms.

In Paris in 1890 these same grains were known under the name 'graines vivantes' (living grains).

French wine farmers called them 'French water kefir' for good health and the improvement of the water.

Yes, and I've mentioned this before, water kefir makes water healthy, it improves on the quality of the water they land and grow in itself.

So for those of you who have plenty (like myself), it helps your water company when you 'loose' a few grains in the water drains.
Because the Nitrate that is found in tapwater is being used up by the water kefir.

Good feeling he??


Where does water kefir come from?

Nobody knows for sure and nobody can really answer that question. Most probably it comes from Mexico, where the Tibi grains (another name for water kefir) grow on the Opuntia Cactus in water as opposed to in sugar water. This was already written by a mr. M. L. Lutz in 1890.

So you see a lot is known and has been written about Tibi and on the other hand there is some mystery, it is one of those mysteries of life.

As all great things, all genuine beauty has a bit of a mystery. (Oh Oooh, I am becoming phylosophical).. And that is exactly why kefir has also been given the name 'Manna' (see: the bible) or a 'Gift from God' as in something that fell from the sky, something that came from God.


And now for the Scientists amongst us. A symbiosis!

Under a microsocope we can see that the water kefir grains consist of different micro-organisms. Bacteria and yeastcells, that originate in mass amounts within the grains themselves. A biologist would call this a Symbiosis. Various organisms living together this way and benefitting from each other. Lactic acid bacteria need enough vitamins and provisions (=levensmiddelen) to grow. The needed substances are provided from the inside by the yeast. The bacteria produce Acid just for that purpose which is very much needed by the Yeast and protects it from joining with other unwanted Micro-organisms. In the acidic environment strange bacteria and Pathogens cannot live and can't increase.

Water Kefir is a symbiosis of the Lactic Bacilis Brevis, Streptococcus Lactis and Saccharomyces Pastrorianus and Saccharomyces Radaisii as component.

What a mouthful.

And even more bacteria and yeastcells can be part of this, because more than one composition is possible.


It is a very well known 'old friend' in the world

Yeasts and bacteria are used a lot in many foodstuffs and products around the world. Also for the making of healthy drinks. Besides Water kefir there is Milk kefir, Kombucha, beer, wine and many more. They all have yeast and bacteria as components and a 'yeasting process' as part of their making. And besides drinks there are other foods, such as bread, Sourdough, cookies, etc..

The use of different yeasts and certain bacteria to break down sugar and Carbonic Acid (koolzuur) and to add organic acids (organische zuren) to the making of a delicious 'alcohol poor drink' has been known for ages..

This is answering the question 'What is Kefir' in many ways, included the more Scientific way.

To answer it very simply, we can bring this story down to a few sentences. It is a Micro Organism, made up out of various components, Bacteria and Yeastcells. The bacteria are of the Lactic acid kind. They grow from the inside of the micro organism itself.

To end this story I would conclude by saying: it is great that we have it, that it's around and that once you have some of those grains, they can keep growing and you can make a wonderful tasting (there are many recipes) AND HEALTHY DRINK from them.

Mijn ervaringen met Water kefir

Zoals afgesproken

Al zijn de meesten onder ons van de Lage Landen, heel goed in het Engels (zeg ik met gepaste trots). Nederlands sprekende mensen en vooral Vlamingen staan bekend als 'Polyglotten' of veeltaligen. Die Engelssprekenden denken dat ze een streepje voor hebben omdat ze een 'wereldtaal' kunnen spreken, maar wij weten wel beter.

Alle gekheid op een stokje, ik wil het met jullie over mezelf en mijn ervaringen met water-kefir hebben.

Ondertussen ben ik in de 3de maand dat ik het drink (neen, ik ben niet zwanger) of misschien wel, maar dan van een betere gezondheid.


Er verandert iets in mijn lichaam

Want langzaam maar zeker beginnen er dingen in mijn gewaarwording van mijn gezondheid en mijn lichaam te veranderen. Ten eerste begon het al dat ik geen biertje meer aan geraakt heb sinds ik de eerste keer water kefir dronk. En dat zonder mezelf iets op te leggen of te kort te doen.

Wat me ook opvalt is dat ik geen enkele ander limonade achtig drankje dagelijks zou kunnen drinken (blaagh) -want ergens is het dat toch- een fruitig limonadeachtig drankje, maar dan toch met iets heel speciaaaaals erin. En dat hele speciale dat is natuurlijk de water kefir. En wat is water kefir nu eigenlijk.. Tja' daar is niet iedereen het over eens en het is ook wel een beetje mysterieus... Hoe ontstaat nu zoiets als water kefir? Een vraag die ik een dezer dagen wat beter wil beantwoorden.


Langzamerhand gebeuren er ook andere dingen

-ik heb minder interesse in zoet,
-ik eet minder vlees,
-kortom, Ik eet gewoon minder.

Wat in mijn geval een goede zaak is, omdat ik toch een paar kilootjes te veel begon te wegen. Als je langzamerhand naar nieuwe broeken moet uit gaan kijken, dan kan dat een vervelende en daarbij nog een dure zaak worden.

Dat is ook nog zoiets geweldigs van water kefir, als je het eenmaal hebt en je verzorgt het goed, dan heb je het voor altijd. En als je het goed verzorgt, blijft het maar groeien.

Als je de juiste temperatuur, het juist licht, je water kefir het juiste plekje geeft.

Dan ben je op een gegeven moment -zoals ik- gedwongen om er wat aan te doen. En als je het heerlijk goedje niet weg wil gooien zal je er -net als ik - wat moeten aan doen om het te verspreiden en er andere mensen mee bekend te maken.

Tja' daar is niet iedereen het over eens en het is ook wel een beetje mysterieus. Hoe ontstaat nu zoiets als water kefir, waar komt het vandaan.


Iets mysterieus, en oh zo eenvoudig, zo nederig

Maar daarover wou ik het dan wat later nog hebben.

En hopelijk hebben jullie er niets op tegen dat ik mij dan weer richt op de minderbedeelden onder ons, zij die maar 1 taal spreken.

Water kefir mommy's got a headache

And I'll tell you why, hoping you get a few laughs out of it, cause I do!! :-)

No, it's not the water kefir babes, they're fine, they're a thriving and a growing, kicking in those jars and busting out. No, it's me. It's 6 am and I got out of bed, cause I can't sleep. It's not the migraine kind of headache, no, but the 'breaking my brains' kind.
As someone just mentioned: my brain and my bum are numb, well ditto, so are mine.

A month ago I vaguely heard about the word Blog, but don't ask me, didn't know really what it was. Sounded like a frog with a cold if you ask me. Let alone did I know it could be anything for me?? No, I was minding my own business, (honestly -- not much of a business). My life was not exactly a rose garden. Trying hard to swim but almost drowning nevertheless --- and searching for something, didn't know what.

Yes I was drinking my water kefir happily since a month or so and feeling real good about that. And kinda noticing I was starting to get quite a lot of it too, taking up more and more space on my fridge. And since it was feeling so good to my body, I thought it would be a real shame to just toss it in the bin or in the loo. So I thought -I just might- maybe there are others outthere who would like some?? And I first put some adds locally that nobody was looking at. Then one fine day, I hit the 'web' and with a little doodling and a oodling, I eventually landed on 'gohealthgirl.com'

It was like a fresh wind, a breeze of blossoms came darting into my life. And then she wanted some (what, all the way from Belgium?) and then she convinced me into starting a blog and to sell those 'sexy babies' And she kept saying blog, blog, blog, whatever I said.


It was just the 'kick in the pants' I needed

I trashed some and wiggled a bit.. But then a Yes came to me! A good and a great! Must admit I had the jitters, but did it anyway as I do most things I have a good feeling about in my life. And I've seen 'the whole wide world' doing that. Just like 'The Fool' in the Tarotdeck.

Don't know what the 'Tarot' is?
Hell, sometime in some other Blog maybe --- but definitely later...
And off I went, with my well known, - to me, but not to you- reckless enthusiasm. Mind you, this is all only about a week ago!!

And she told me there were folks outthere waiting in line for those kefir 'kiddies', lots of you who would gladly adopt them and 'enlighten' my groaning fridge. Cause that's where they live. It's like they're all waiting for the bus, the plain or the taxi..
And so I'm imagining all of you waiting for me to get it together.

And I will, and I will. Cause I want you to have some!!

And they definitely want to meet you and add some sparkle, some juice, some zest, some kazoom to your life -without the hangover the next day (as Amy did say)- and with the added bonus of gradually increasing health...


I promise...

And I also promise to tell you more about what they do for my increasing health -although this very minute not to my 'mental' health.

As I am tackling the hurdles of getting myself established as an 'International water kefir mommy'.

And so forgive me when you're waiting, I'm hurrying up as much as I can. All for the good cause of making sure I can send you those babies 'smoothly'.

The Water Kefir Grains grow very fast

At the same time the Watrer Kefir Grains keep growing, the granules in the fermenting liquid are increasing fast because of the increase of the healthy bacteria and yeast. Inside of the granules, Carbonic acid bubbles are starting to form because of fermentation process.

You can see these carbonic acid bubbles as the bright core of the Water Kefir Grain. They give the little 'nuggets' the power to float. This upward floating power is what makes the granules break and the 'daughter nuggets' sink to the bottom again.

The increase is more on the first day than on the 2nd. They can grow 100% that way in 2 days.

I have also noticed that the growth of Water Kefir Grains seems to depend on the form of the container. It is my experience that they grow stronger in a container with a wider bottom.

It is also my experience they like the top of the fridge, (I'm guessing it's the light vibration) and they like a temperature of 17-18 degrees Celsius (60-65 F).

Water Kefir Grains enjoy light, but not direct bright sunshine. They grow very well at my home, so these are the conditions I am propagating here.

Haaaa... Your drink is ready.


The drink you've obtained this way is light, sparkly and not clear. It tastes pleasantly sour and strongly tickles your palate, especially when it has the time to stay in the bottle for a few days. Oh well, it never gets the chance in my house, as so far, I drink it all every day again and again.

They are alive!!

Today is 'Water Kefir Washing' day. Once a week I make sure to refresh the water and the sugar my lovely 'water kefir bebes' are thriving in. And I am not talking about the few spoons in the jars I make my daily drink in, but of the increasing amount of other 'Aqua gems' waiting to be sent to water kefir lovers around the world. I want to tell you more about them. I want to tell you about how they come alive..

Straight after you've "fed" your water kefir grains, an intensive fermenting process begins. It is fun and interesting to see how the fermentation process makes the liquid come alive.
Carbonic acid bubbles are starting to rise to the surface, and you can see how 'life' comes into the liquid. A few raisins float up while you're watching. The cause of all this movement is that the yeast and the sugar is fermenting. During that process carbonic acid gas develops and a little bit of alcohol (2% or less in 2 days, depending on the amount of sugar you use). The lactic acid bacteria are partly converted in alcohol and in carbonic acid. The carbonic acid bubbles are attaching themselves to the raisins and the kefir grains and so are carrying them up to the surface, like tiny balloons. There the carbonic acid bubbles burst open, the gas escapes and the raisins descend to the bottom again. It is a constant rising and descending because of the carbonic acid bubbles attaching themselves to the raisins, escaping on the surface of your container and then gracefully descending again.
And I can always see when my drink is ready. By the end of the 48 hour process, also the dried apricots I use for taste are sitting at the top of the jar, ready to jump out and letting you know..

What do water kefir grains look like?

First things first:

-there is 'water kefir' and 'milk kefir' and water kefir looks and feels distinctly different. I'll make a short comparison here to avoid confusion and then I'll 'rave on' about my own favourite variety -the watery kind- also called SKG (sugar kefir grains or non-dairy kefir)..
-The milky variety is gel-like in texture and white in colour. The water variety is denser, looks more transparent and is not sticky and slimy like the milky kind.. When you see them together it is easy to spot the difference but when you pick them up there is absolutely no mistake. The milky ones stick to your hands and the water variety is difficult to pick up without them falling apart in little granules..
-The watery kind bounces when dropped on a solid surface, whereas milk-kefir grains will not do so, because they are sticky and gel-like.

That is what makes them different although it is plain to see they are related, they're definitely family.

So much for the comparison and now on to my preferred variety: the 'water kefir bebes' :))

-They are kind of whitish and transparent, with a diameter of about 1 cm (half an inch). They never seem to be able to get bigger, because they fall apart.
-On the inside they look like cooked rice and when you would look at them under a microscope, you would be amazed about their grainy texture, like a little lump of tiny pebbles stuck to each other.
-They are quite delicate having a tendency to easily chip or shear with a faceted edge.
-They break apart easily with little applied force. When you (finally) manage to pick one up, being as careful as you can, and you rub it gently between your thumb and fingers, it tends to fall apart, making it hard to clean up when you've made a mess.

(Believe me I know!!!) I've made a mess more than once as I'm swimming in water kefir grains that need to be washed and put in fresh sugar on a regular basis.

-When they fall on a surface they bounce like mini tennisballs (I like tennis, yeah Kim!!), they are quite elastic like that.

-They are soft, fragile and spongy.

-They almost look like glass crystals or like diamonds..

Diamonds are a girl's best friend?? No chance, water kefir is this girl's best friend...

And WHY would I drink this water kefir?

For starters, it's just delicious and even better, it is healthy..
And you can can make at home again and again as soon as you have the Water Kefir grains. Making it takes about 48 hrs, so just 2 more days of patience and you're ready to have your first taste.
Personally I started drinking it begin October. I am very enthusiastic about it’s taste and effect


The following effects are attributed to Water Kefir:

-good for the intestines and the intestinal flora (also after infection and the use of antibiotics)
-beneficial effect with illness
-regulates digestion, helps against intestinal problems and constipation.
-lowers blood pressure, good for blood circulation.
-activates metabolism
-nerve strengthening, favorable influence on the brain.
-favorable influence on liver and kidneys
-favorable influence on the skin
-contains vit. C, D and vitamins of the B complex
-anti tumor properties, reduces the size of tumours
-anti inflammatory properties
-against colon ulcers

Amy asked: other names for water kefir?

Hi there water kefir lovers, getting interested yet??

There's much more to come, but just for starters:
there are 2 varieties of Kefir:
-one is the milky variety and the other is the one I have
-the water based variety...

With the milky one you make a kind of yoghurt, but better than yoghurt and with the water variety you make a kind of (almost) non alcoholic- sect. Old alcoholic as I am, of course I have the water variety... And to make drinking it a celebration, I always drink it in a nice 'celebrative' glass, like a champagne flute.

And soon I'll get the other variety too..

There is so much to say about water kefir, but I am going to start somewhere.

Water kefir grains are also called:

-sugar kefir grains (SKG)

Here's your Water Kefir mommy

hi there.. Here's your 'water kefir mommy' from Antwerp Belgium... Since I got them on an eco-market 2 months ago, I became a big fan of Water Kefir and have been drinking 1.5 litres approximately every day. From the moment 'go' my body just loved it and kind of gobbled it up, so yummie.. And it's good for ya too, I am sure and will tell you more soon.. First thing that happened is that I spontaneously stopped longing for booze (alcoholic beverages) really true!! I used to be a quite regular drinker of a beer or two, almost daily.
Never touched another beer since day 1. And those last 5 beers have been utterly forgotten and are lying untouched in the fridge.. Who knows for how long they will be there..
Now the next thing that is starting to happen is that my sweet tooth is getting less. The thoughts are still there, but not the urge to go and get that cookie or that piece of chocolate.. I wonder what else those Kefir grains have in store for me...

And a first answer to one of your questions:


How do I make my yummie water kefir?


I take a nice glass jar, a liter is a good measure. I add 3 full spoons of nice healthy kefir grains to filtered water, mineral water or water from the tap (check out the quality of the tap water in your area first). When you wonder whether tapwater is good enough? Yes, it can be. Sometime later I'll explain that the grains even manage to make the water better!
I take a handful of raisins and 4 dried apricots. Biological is best! Then I add 1.5 table spoon of sugar. You can use upto 4 spoons if you have a sweet tooth. And add half a lemon with the peel... Leave it on your fridge (as I do) or a nice light spot for at least 24 hours. Mine stays for 48 hours and you can leave it longer, it all depends on taste..
Then take out and discard all the dried fruits, squeeze out the lemon and rinse the kefir grains. Not everybody does, but that's what I do and mine are in great shape and they keep growing and growing... Your kefirdrink looks like a not clear slightly foggy Champagne and tastes a bit like a fruity 'demi sec'.. It is just lovely..
